What We Stock for Freshwater

Our freshwater section runs the full range from peaceful community tanks to African and South American cichlid biotopes, betta setups in proper sized tanks, and seasonal pond stock. Substrates, decor, plants and equipment match each biotope, you'll find Texas Holey Rock for Mbuna right next to mopani driftwood for blackwater tetra tanks.

Local Notes for Sarasota and Surrounding Areas

Lakewood Ranch (~25 min via I-75)

Lakewood Ranch tap runs harder and more alkaline than central Sarasota, which works well for livebearers (platys, mollies) and most community fish. We've helped several Lakewood Ranch families set up planted community tanks that have run multiple years; bring your room dimensions and a photo of where the tank goes.

Siesta Key (~20 min via Stickney Point)

Siesta Key condo and beach-area homes often want smaller-footprint tanks (10-20 gallon planted nano). Salt-air corrosion on metal aquarium gear near the Gulf is a real consideration; we'll spec heaters and lights with sealed connections for waterfront installations.

FAQ

Common Questions About Freshwater

What's the easiest first freshwater fish?
Platys, harlequin rasboras, and white cloud minnows. Hardy, peaceful, cheap. Avoid neon tetras until your tank is at least three months old.
Do tropical fish need a heater in Florida?
Yes. Air-conditioned Sarasota homes drop into the low 70s overnight. Most tropical fish want a stable 76 to 80°F.
How long does it take to cycle a freshwater tank?
4 to 6 weeks fishless. Bottled bacteria like Fritz TurboStart 700 can shorten it to 2 to 3 weeks. We'll test your water free during cycling.
