Have you ever pictured a beautiful aquarium in your home or office, full of vibrant, peaceful tropical community fish? It’s a wonderful goal, and getting it right is easier than you might think.

Our freshwater community section is built around one simple idea: we only stock fish that actually get along. We want you to have a thriving, harmonious tank, not a stressful one.

You’ll find a carefully chosen selection of species that our own team loves, including peaceful tetras like cardinals and rummynose, colorful rasboras, and active danios. For the bottom of your tank, we have hardy corydoras and helpful bristlenose plecos. We also bring in a rotating selection of dwarf gouramis and apistogrammas to serve as gentle centerpiece fish.

Every single fish you see in our store has lived in our quarantine system for two full weeks before going on sale. This critical period allows us to spot and treat any potential illnesses, like the common freshwater Ich. We also use this time to condition the fish onto prepared, high-quality foods such as Fluval Bug Bites, ensuring they are strong and eating well. What you take home is a fish that’s ready to thrive in your tank, not one struggling to survive.

We’re here to help you make the perfect additions to your aquarium. If you bring a photo of your tank and a list of your current fish, we can talk through what works, what doesn’t, and what to add next. Our team will not sell you fish that are incompatible. That’s a hard rule for us, and we’ve turned down sales to uphold it.

Stocking mistakes are one of the main reasons new tanks fail. They can lead to aggressive fish harming peaceful ones and can cause customers to lose trust in the hobby. We want to help you avoid that entirely.

The nitrogen cycle is the invisible engine that keeps any community tank healthy. To keep your water safe during changes, we carry proven dechlorinators like Seachem Prime and Fritz Complete that also detoxify harmful ammonia and nitrite. You can also bring in a 100ml sample of your tank water for free in-store testing any day we’re open. Catching a small problem with ammonia or nitrite early can save your entire tank.

If you’re just starting out with a brand-new tank, please start with our cycling guide before you buy any fish. It’s the most important first step.

For families putting together a first aquarium, our beginner-friendly Sarasota family aquarium guide is a great place to start. Or you can just walk in and chat with us.

The store is located at 2847 Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota. There is free parking right out front, and we are open seven days a week.

What Customers Say

Real reviews from regulars across the Suncoast.

"Finally a fish store where the staff knows what they're talking about. Marcus talked me out of buying fish that would've died in my tank. That's integrity."

"Best coral selection between Tampa and Fort Myers. Healthy frags, fair prices, and they actually run the same lights I do, so I can see what a coral will look like in my tank."

"Drove down from Tampa for a specific Acropora frag and they had it, dipped, and ready. Won't buy from chain stores again. The difference in fish health is night and day."

FAQ

Common Questions About Tropical Community Fish

How many community fish can I keep in a 20-gallon tank?
Roughly 12 to 15 small (1-2 inch adult) community fish, depending on species, planting and filtration. Always cycle the tank before adding fish, and stock in groups (6+ for schoolers like cardinal tetras and harlequin rasboras).
Do I really need a heater for tropical fish in Florida?
Yes. Air-conditioned Sarasota homes regularly drop into the low 70s overnight, and most tropical community fish want a stable 76-80°F. A 100W adjustable heater handles a 20-gallon community tank comfortably.
What's the hardiest first fish?
Platys, harlequin rasboras and white cloud minnows. All cheap, all peaceful, and all forgiving of beginner mistakes. Skip neon tetras until your tank is at least 3 months old, neons are sensitive to swings in a fresh setup.
Can I add fish to my new tank today?
Only if the tank is fully cycled (ammonia and nitrite both reading 0). If you're not sure, bring us a water sample. Stocking an uncycled tank is the number one reason new tanks crash.
