Have you ever brought a new saltwater fish home, full of excitement, only to face unexpected problems a week later? It’s a frustrating feeling, and one we work hard to prevent.

We believe the biggest difference between a fish that thrives and one that struggles happens before you even see it.

That’s why our quarantine commitment is at the heart of everything we do. Every single marine fish in our store spends a minimum of two weeks in our dedicated prophylactic quarantine system before it becomes available. This process gives us enough time to spot and treat common issues like ich, velvet, and flukes. It also ensures each fish is readily eating prepared foods and is conditioned for a smooth transition to your home aquarium.

Wide view of the dedicated saltwater room at Gulf Coast Aquatics

Our dedicated saltwater room is stocked with the species that reef and FOWLR (Fish-Only-With-Live-Rock) keepers are looking for. You won’t find just any fish, you’ll find healthy, well-acclimated animals.

We always have a variety of popular choices on hand:

  • Clownfish: You can almost always find multiple morphs, from classic Ocellaris to unique designer variations.
  • Wrasses: Staples like the Six-Line and various Fairy Wrasses are common residents, known for their vibrant colors and active swimming.
  • Tangs: We responsibly house classic Yellow and Blue Tangs in appropriately sized systems to ensure their health and comfort.
  • Utility Fish: An assortment of gobies and blennies are perfect for adding personality and helping to manage algae.

You’ll also find a rotating selection of marine invertebrates. Our stock often includes popular cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp for Aiptasia control, and various hermit crabs and snails to form a robust cleanup crew. Feel free to come by during any of our open hours and spend some time just watching the tanks, we’re always happy to answer questions.

For those who love the technical details, our complete quarantine protocol guide explains the specific medications, water parameters, and observation periods we use. If you’re deciding on your tank’s direction, you can compare the pros and cons in our FOWLR vs reef tank guide.

New to the hobby? We highly recommend starting with our guide to the best beginner saltwater fish for your first tank. It’s also wise to get familiar with common saltwater fish diseases before you bring any animal home.

Proper acclimation is crucial for success. For this reason, we consider the drip acclimation method to be required reading, and we will even send you home with a complimentary drip kit to make it easy. Our full coral selection is located in the same room, so it’s simple to find both a new fish and a new frag in one visit.

How It Works

1

Quarantine on arrival

Every marine fish goes into prophylactic QT (Coppersafe-treated, hyposalinity for invert-incompatible species) for 14 days minimum.

2

Observed daily

We watch for ich (Cryptocaryon), velvet (Amyloodinium), and flukes. Fish that show symptoms get extended treatment, not the sales floor.

3

Conditioned onto food

We get every fish eating prepared food, frozen mysis, pellets, or both, before sale. Fish that won't eat don't move forward.

4

Drip acclimated at pickup

We send you home with a drip kit and step-by-step instructions matched to your tank's specific gravity and pH.

What Customers Say

Real reviews from regulars across the Suncoast.

"Finally a fish store where the staff knows what they're talking about. Marcus talked me out of buying fish that would've died in my tank. That's integrity."

"Best coral selection between Tampa and Fort Myers. Healthy frags, fair prices, and they actually run the same lights I do, so I can see what a coral will look like in my tank."

"Drove down from Tampa for a specific Acropora frag and they had it, dipped, and ready. Won't buy from chain stores again. The difference in fish health is night and day."

FAQ

Common Questions About Saltwater Fish

Why is the quarantine such a big deal?
Marine ich and velvet can wipe out a reef tank in days. Most chains skip QT to get fish on the floor faster, which is why the survival rate from a chain-store purchase is roughly half of what it should be. Two weeks in our QT system catches the parasites, treats them, and gets the fish eating, so what you take home actually lives.
Can I add new fish straight to my display?
Risky, even from us. We strongly recommend running a 4-6 week home QT on top of our 2-week QT, especially for tangs and angels. Quarantine layers, ours plus yours, are how reef tanks stay disease-free long-term.
What's the easiest first saltwater fish?
Ocellaris clownfish, royal gramma, and firefish, in that order. All hardy, peaceful, eat readily, and tolerate beginner mistakes. Skip tangs, angels, and butterflies for the first six months.
Do you carry marine invertebrates?
Yes, cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, hermit crabs, snails (turbo, nassarius, trochus), and the occasional starfish or sea urchin. Inverts are sensitive to copper, so they go through a separate copper-free QT path.
