Have you ever thought about the vibrant life that fancy goldfish and koi can bring to your home or garden? It’s a wonderful hobby, but we want to help you get it right from the start.

We see a lot of new fish owners in our Sarasota shop, and we’re always straight with them about what these amazing creatures truly need. A single fancy goldfish, like an oranda or ryukin, needs at least a 30-gallon tank to thrive. For a koi, you really need an outdoor pond.

That little carnival bowl is not a home, it’s a slow tragedy, and we want to help you avoid that heartache.

Here are a few honest notes on keeping goldfish and pond fish happy here in Florida.

  • Florida’s climate is a unique challenge. Our mild winters are perfectly fine for koi and comets in an outdoor pond. The real issue is the intense summer heat. Your pond needs shade from plants like water lilies, good oxygenation from a waterfall or aerator, and a deep section of at least 3-4 feet. This deep spot gives fish a cool place to escape the heat when surface temperatures rise.
  • Hurricanes are a serious factor. Any pond plan in Sarasota needs a hurricane plan. You should think about what to do during an evacuation, how to handle debris getting into the water, and how you’ll power your pumps after a storm. Many pond owners invest in a small generator for this reason.
  • Florida has determined predators. We share our state with some effective hunters. Great Blue Herons, raccoons, and even North American River Otters can empty a shallow pond. Your setup should include protective netting stretched tightly over the surface and avoid shallow, sloping sides that give raccoons easy access.

What Customers Say

Real reviews from regulars across the Suncoast.

"Finally a fish store where the staff knows what they're talking about. Marcus talked me out of buying fish that would've died in my tank. That's integrity."

"Best coral selection between Tampa and Fort Myers. Healthy frags, fair prices, and they actually run the same lights I do, so I can see what a coral will look like in my tank."

"Drove down from Tampa for a specific Acropora frag and they had it, dipped, and ready. Won't buy from chain stores again. The difference in fish health is night and day."

FAQ

Common Questions About Goldfish & Pond Fish

How big a tank does one fancy goldfish need?
30 gallons for one fancy goldfish, plus 10 gallons for each additional fish. They produce a heavy bioload and grow to 6-8 inches as adults. The bowl-and-castle setup at the carnival is a slow-motion failure.
Can I keep goldfish with tropical fish?
No. Goldfish are coldwater (60-72°F) and tropical fish need 76-80°F. Mixed-temp tanks stress both. Goldfish also grow large and outcompete community fish at feeding time.
When do you get pond koi in?
Spring and early summer (March through June for Sarasota). Pond water temps are stable enough then for safe acclimation. We bring in a limited selection of young koi and pond-grade goldfish, call ahead to check current stock.
Do you install or service ponds?
No. We sell pond fish, but we don't install ponds, design ponds, or do pond maintenance. Other Sarasota and Bradenton businesses handle that, ask us and we'll point you to one we trust.
